1927 news report: Donald Trump's dad arrested in KKK brawl with cops

According to a New York Times article published in June 1927, a man with the name and address of Donald Trump's father was arraigned after Klan members attacked cops in Queens, N.Y.

• In an article subtitled "Klan assails policeman", Fred Trump is named in among those taken in during a late May "battle" in which "1,000 Klansmen and 100 policemen staged a free-for-all." At least two officers were hurt during the event, after which the Klan's activities were denounced by the city's Police Commissioner, Joseph A. Warren.

• The events described in the Times' article took place 22 years before Donald Trump was even born, and he’s not responsible for any youthful sins his father may have committed.
• Trump's grandfather, Friedrich Drumpf  (anglicized to Frederick Trump) came to the U.S. in the 1800s.

In 1927, Donald Trump's father would have been 21 years old, and not yet a well-known figure. Multiple sources report his residence at the time—and throughout his life—at the same address.

To be clear, this is not proof that Trump senior—who would later go on to become a millionaire real estate developer—was a member of the Ku Klux Klan or even in attendance at the event. Despite sharing lawyers with the other men, it's conceivable that he may have been an innocent bystander, falsely named, or otherwise the victim of mistaken identity during or following a chaotic event.

The name of Trump's grandfather, Friedrich Drumpf, was anglicized to Frederick Trump, but he died several years before the report.

Fred Trump, who died in 1999, was a New York real estate developer and the father of mogul and presidential candidate Donald Trump. Born in the Bronx to German immigrants, Fred became a real estate developer in his teens; at about the time of his apparent arrest, he was constructing single-family houses in Queens, according to his obituary in the Times. At his death, his net worth was estimated at between $250m and $300m. A savvy businessman and real estate developer, his wealth enabled the junior Trump to start big.

• Fred Trump built his  real estate empire with about  27,000 residential properties across Brooklyn and Queens. When the elder Trump passed away in 1999 he had a net worth about $300 million.
• In 1987 when Trump published “The Art of the Deal,” his net worth was about $1 billion.

Eighty Americans from 42 ethnic groups were recipients of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation.
The medals were presented to the recipients, all either naturalized or native Americans, at a ceremony Oct. 27 on Ellis Island. That is the day before the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty, the final event of the 1986 Liberty Centennial observances.

Brazilian fans react to their team’s 7-1 loss at the end of their 2014 World Cup semifinals against Germany at the Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte.

• Brazil has won five World Cups but no Brazilian has won a Nobel prize.
• In winning the right to host this year’s World Cup (and the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016) Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s then president, wanted to highlight that the country now has other reasons for confidence beyond football. The tournament would showcase the planet’s seventh-largest economy, a vibrant democracy and remarkable social progress that has seen poverty and income inequality fall steadily in this century.

The 7-1 semi-final thrashing on July 8th 2014 at the hands of Germany in Belo Horizonte’s Mineirão stadium was Brazil’s Armageddon. It was not just the scale of defeat—the worst since 1920. It was also the manner in which Germany’s fast and technically superior players cut through the home defence, as easily as a machete through cassava. To rub salt in a gaping wound, it is Argentina—Brazil’s arch-rivals—who will face Germany in the final on July 13th.

This humiliation has left Brazilians shell-shocked. No other country in the world has a closer identification with football, as Rodrigues’s hyperbole highlights. That may partly be because Brazil has no real Hiroshimas to fear: apart from brief engagement on the Allied side in Italy in 1944-45, it has not fought a war since the 1860s (against Paraguay). Through good fortune and tolerance, it faces neither military threats, nor terrorism, nor ethnic or religious tensions.

 On Tuesday, the pain was raw and immediate. Even Dilma Rousseff, Brazil’s president, felt it necessary to post her sadness on Twitter. “I am immensely sorry for all of us,” she wrote.

Marc Anthony finally files for divorce from Jennifer Lopez

Marc Anthony, AKA Marco Muniz, has now filed for divorce from Jennifer Lopez, citing 'irreconcilable differences'.

The pair, who have two children together, split last July.

Latin pop star Anthony, real name Marco Muniz, filed the papers on Monday in LA County Superiour Court.

The 43-year-old is asking for joint custody of his and J-Lo's four-year-old twins, Emma and Max.
With her huge success with her solo music career and her role as an American Idol TV judge, Lopez, 42, is unlikely to ask for any financial help but Marc has stated he doesn't want to provide any alimony to his wife and wants both parties to pay for their own legal fees.

Singer Amy Winehouse found dead at her home in London

LONDON — Police say Amy Winehouse, the troubled diva who had struggled with drug and alcohol abuse, has been found dead at her home in London.

Police confirmed that a 27-year-old female was pronounced dead at the home in Camden Square northern London.

London's Metropolitan Police released a statement but didn't identify the singer: "Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased," the statement reads, according to the U.K.'s Daily Mail. "On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Inquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained."
