Few parts of the world have so many sources of tension and potential conflict as do the Caucasus. Corruption, suppression of media and political opposition and human rights concerns add to internal pressures affecting regional tensions. Ethnic and regional rivalries persist.

Russia is seen as both an antagonist and protagonist by many in the region.
