Pope Benedict XVI to become first pope in 600 years to resign, citing age and waning energy


"After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry," Pope Benedict XVI said in a surprise statement while at a ceremony to canonize three saints, according to a text released by the Vatican.
